Through the Foundations, Carlsberg has played an important role in Danish science, arts, culture and society since 1876. Their support of ground-breaking research and internationally-significant works has also had worldwide benefits.
The Foundation’s aim was to manage the Carlsberg Laboratory and to support Danish scientific research within the fields of natural sciences, mathematics, philosophy, the humanities and social sciences. It was run by five Trustees elected by and from the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters.
As a result of the conflict with his son Carl, JC Jacobsen left his brewery to the Foundation when he died in 1887. It also took ownership of Carl Jacobsen’s New Carlsberg Brewery in 1902.

The Foundation must hold at least 51% of the votes. The Trustees sit on the Carlsberg Board of Directors and the Foundation’s chairman is chairman of Carlsberg.
